? on setting up a hybrid XP Home Network (Ethernet + Wireless)

Have a couple of questions I hope someone can answer. I am trying to get
this home network set up so that all 4 computers recognize each other. The
reason I ask about the "Hybrid" setup is because one of the computers is run
directly into the router and three of the computers are wireless.

The setup is a NETGEAR WAP (Router). Cable Modem plugged into the router.
Router is configured with 128b Encryption and limited to MAC addresses
locally.

One Desktop is plugged directly into the router via Ethernet Cable. The
three laptops are running Netgear and Linksys Wireless Adapters.

All computers are running either XP or XP Pro.

I ran Windows XP Network Configuration on each computer. All computers have
the same Workgroup Name and each Computer has a different ID (Name). The
names are basically the same but ending in -1, -2, -3. I started with the
computer connected by ethernet and went computer to computer afterwards,
running the Network Connection Wizard.

So, is it possible to have a network with this configuration?

If so, is it correct to run the wizard on each computer? It seems to me its
almost like setting a different network up on each computer rather than
having one Network.

How do I get the computers to recognize each other on the Network? Following
MS instructions isnt making it happen.

I am under the impression that with a wireless connection, you need a
wireless print hub or some other hardware to be able to print (Over a
wireless network). Is that correct or is it possible to configure it someway
to print say, through the wired printer. i.e. Send the print job to
hardwired computer and print from there automatically (Other than emailing
it)

Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong here? I would appreciate it very
much.

Thanks in advance
Jeff

Hi,

This page has mixed network help
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/mmr_intro.htm

About printing, you could connect the printer to the hard wired
computer and print through the network or you could buy a print
server.

So, wouldnt my NETGEAR WAP with Ethernet support be considered an MMR
(MultiMedia Router), if so then I do not need to go through all these steps.
So, does anyone know what I need to do to get the computers talking to each
other?

Yes

It seems to me its
microsoft is setting the workgroup, file sharing permissions and networking
parameters with the wizard

We need more information to answer that question. By instance do the
computers all of them sucessfully connect to the router? are all the
computers in
the same subnet or they are divided? is your router passing netbui and
netbios? what is your configuration for netbios and netbui in the computers?
can they ping each other?? etc etc etc

No

or is it possible to configure it someway
Yes, the simples way obviously is to purchase a network printer and atache
it to the router, that way all computers will be able to print as far as
they are connected to the network (best solution). If you do not have one or
you do not want to purchase one you can share with the printer installed in
the wired computer with the wireless one by setting the according
paramenters in network file and printer sharing and then installing the
printer in each wireless computer. The disadvange is obvious, if the wired
computer is not on there's no printing period. Other options is a network
print server that would "transform" your printer in a network printer
(honestly i preffer the first one).
No idea we need more info

I would appreciate it very

Yes, they all connect to the the router either through ethernet (1) or
wireless (3)

Subnet Mask for all computers is 255.255.255.0
Subnet Mask for the router is 255.255.248.0

is your router passing netbui and

No, TCP/IP

what is your configuration for netbios and netbui in the computers?
can they ping each other?? etc etc etc
No they will not ping each other.

No they will not ping each other.

then the problem you have is basic routing rather than an issue with the
network configuration in the Microsoft side. For you to be able to browse
from machine to machine the computers should ping each other (meaning that
the router should allow to pass that traffic trough the networks) and
NetBIOS will need to run freely in your network, otherwise it will not work
since there's no connectivity between them (from the OS perspective). I'm
not really familiar with netgear (I'm more a Cisco guy) so not sure exactly
sure how to change that feature but as far as I recall netgear is pretty
graphic so you shouldn't find any problems setting in up. Let me know if
that clarifies your issue.
