Omnipage worth upgrading?

Omnipage SE came with my Canon scanner. I'm just looking for something
to quickly scan book pages, and the basic Omnipage does an okay job of
scanning text. Would I get better results from buying Omnipage 15 or
14, or is there better software out there? I don't need anything
fancy. Just a fast, accurate text scanner that doesn't cost too much.

I can say that Omnipage Pro 15 is the best OCR engine I have ever used.

Pro 15 is far more accurate that Pro 12 was. Pro 15 also formats the page
better, you get more of a what you see is what you get.

I'd agree. Readiris 9 came with a scanner and it isn't nearly as good.
Omnipage 15 isn't perfect when it comes to formatting and I'm sure they
will improve the next version, but if you registered your SE version you
will probably be getting promotional offers of "$100 off" that are worth
looking into. If the offer still seems too expensive wait--it'll be back
again. (I'd set up a junk mail account to send it to as they at least
used to be very persisitent, although I don't remember getting much
lately.) Call Nuance and ask about promotional offers if they don't send
you anything. They ought to be due for a new version and might be
dumping the old one cheaply.

My biggest knock against the program is that they are greedy when it comes
to customer service; they only give you ONE call before they start
charging for it. I saved mine for an entire year before I got tired of
PDF Create (seperate program that comes with OmniPage) not working and got
it fixed, but fortunately the main program was intuitive enough that I
never had to ask for any hand-holding.

That, by the way, is their excuse, that it's too expensive to help
customers confused by their program so they encourage us to use the
on-disc manual by charging $20 for help.
