olympus stylus 300 xD card problem

Today my Olympus Stylus 300 camera quit working properly
for some reason. When I take pictures and download them
to my PC all is OK. Later on when I transfer them back
to the xD card using a card reader everything appears to
work fine. I transfer the photos using a card reader to
an extra xD card to take to the store for making hard
copies. Today the machine at the store will no longer
recognize that there are photos on the chip and my camera
will not let me view them either. However, they are on
the chip and when I plug the card reader into the PC they
can be seen. When I put the xD card back into the camera
and turn it on, it tells me there are no photos on the
chip. Example, the spare 16MB xD card, when empty, has
the number 20 remaining on the camera screen. When I
copy (or move) 2 photos (or any number) from the PC to
the xD chip, the number changes to 18, so it took space
from the chip for the 2 photos, and changed the number,
even though it states that there are no photos on the xD
chip. However, I can view the photos on my PC but not on
the camera screen or the store machine as I said
earlier. If I take the xD card with the new photos
directly to the store without downloading them to my PC
and then back to the xD card all appears to be fine. But
this will not let alterations or editing to be done
before hand.

Have you ever had this problem before? I watch this
newsgroup but have not seen a posting like this one.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Did you change the name of the files or edit the photos? If so, your camera
will not be able to read the files. Changing the name of the file is
sufficient to prevent your camera from reading the file. It can read files
with 8 characters filenames and they must be the same type that your camera
uses.
If you want to take edited photos to a store for printing, the best way is
to copy them to a CD-RW and bring this to the store. When done you simply
erase the photos and use the same CD-RW for new photos.
If the store was not able to read them from your card, check that the edited
files had the extension .jpg
With some photo editor you can save as .png, etc. This will not work. The
store can only read .jpg and .tif, perhaps also .bmp

Thank you Yves. You have been the best help ever. I
will use the CD method from now on. I do not know why up
to now it would let me transfer the photos from the PC to
the xD chip to the store machine. Thank you again.
