I've got XP Home and use IE 6. I also run ZoneAlarm 2.6.231. I don't
need bells and whistles--I just need effective port blocking.

Is it still effective?

Why wouldn't you want the most up to date version? It's free! Updates are
very important as they keep the software current with all the latest fixes
and patches that are critical to the protection you are seeking with Zone
Alarm.

You can check your security level at grc.com. It's free and gives a really indepth report of your vulnerabilites.

I just need effective port blocking.

You can use XP's ICF for this purpose. If you want a better protection, get ZA latest version.

Thanks Ramesh,
But what's the difference? Are there more ports to block now
than when ZA 2.6.231 came out?

The latest versions of ZA has additional options such as Components control, ID Lock etc. I think they are not available in the freeware version. Secondly, these reviews might help you:

But that is only in the Pro version. Not much news in the Free version
for a while. I'm a bit curious what will come in the 5.0 version.

From 2.x to 3.x my experience is just more resource/cpu usage :-)

Does the new free Zone Alarm block more ports than the old Zone Alarm
2.6.231?
