Suddenly a Hidden Folder Appears!

I'm using XP Home SP 1. I checked the disk before defragmenting -- it
shows the following highly-fragmented folder:

\$Extend\$0bjld:$0:$INDEX_ALLOCATION

I'm concerned. I've never seen this before. And anything that says
"INDEX" or "ALLOCATION" sounds scary.

What is it? What does it do? Any idea why it's showing up in Norton
suddenly? First time after 6 years?

No idea why Norton is showing this system record. It is used by the file
system. See this discussion for a basic explanation of some of those terms
(scroll down past the ads on the page to read the info):

Well -- if it's fragmented into 210 different pieces, I guess I should
defragment it. Wonder why I've never seen it before.

Because it's hidden. Since it's used by the system to keep track of files
in various ways, I would avoid using defrag on it. Let the system manage
this space.
