Zone Alarm nightmare

C

ConTactMe

My "undefined relative" decided to download/install the latest free version
of Zone Alarm. After this, AOL Instant Messanger was unable to contact the
server, and his Juno browser would give the dreaded "Cannot Find Page"
message. Internet Explorer 6 would work fine (usually), but he wanted things
the way they used to be. I tried n-installing Zone Alarm, but the problems
remained. I also noticed vsmon.exe was still in memory. I coudn't figure out
how to hack the registry to clean out calls to Zone Alarm, and I couldn't
end the vsmon.exe task. I figured out I could rename vsmon.exe even though
it appeared to be in memory. Upon rebooting, I was had to reinstall Juno and
AIM to get them to work. Juno browsed to it's home page fine. Then I tried
using IE6 again. All wesites lead me to the dreaded zonelab page that sarts
with the following:

Notice from Zone Labs Internet Security
This page is to notify you that ZoneAlarm has detected a problem with
your installation,
and therefore has restricted Internet access from your machine for your
protection. Don't panic!
The step-by-step instructions listed here will help you to determine
the problem, and explain how to resolve the issue.

Well, it was too late I was beginning to panic. But I pulled myself
together, and decided to come here for help. So, the final word is, "HELP!".

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

You came to a lot of 'here's'
24hoursupport.helpdesk,microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.browse
r,microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.setup

You forgot the ZA forum and the firewall newsgroup.

What OS? If you can uninstall it by the normal means do it, then delete the
temp files and reboot. Then run a reg cleaner and reboot again.

Re install ZONE Alarm.

Open the system tray icon and disable the "Run ZA at startup option"

When sure this is okay and applied reboot.

THEN, and only then, uninstall

You must reboot or it will not be able to uninstall and the firewall engine
will still be running.

OK, I'll try that. It's WinXP. Dang, all that typing and I forgot the
obviously important data.

Thanks.

I tried the ZA forum, no reply. The firewall newsgroup -- AHAH! I knew I was
forgetting something, unfortunately the most logical one. Confucius say,
"frustration inhibits neural harmony"

Thanks.

Thanks to all for the helpful replies. I did a 3rd reinstall and it actually
worked. First time I was able to see the GUI and disable anything. After
final uninstall, everything works like a charm.

Thanks once again.

No problem. I think Zonelabs had to make it difficult to disable the engine
programmatically for security reasons so the firewall keeps running even if
you kill the interface, making it almost impossible to remove without then
delving into the registry.

What seems like a nuisance at first sight is in fact a deliberate safety
feature.
