internet stops working but can ping

I'm posting this in hopes of saving somone the headaches I went through
on a clients machine.

The computer booted fine ran fine but the internet browsers would stop
working after 8 to 10 min.
The system could ping (www.cnet.com), address would resolve and
everything, but still browsers not working to the same address.

My solution was this, Open task manager and look for VSMON.exe,
that file is from Zone Alarm ,that file was still active on the
computer but somehow Zone Alarm was no longer installed properly,
The fix was this, re-install Zone Alarm and when prompted Do a Clean
Install.

reboot and you should be fixed..

so if you see VSMON.exe running in task manager but no Zone Alarm icon
in the lower right hand corner of your taskbar re-install Zone Alarm

can you surf on a dial-up connection? If not, you may have a Winsock issue.

before I resolved the issue I had rebuilt the winsock several times thinking
the system may have had a rootkit on it (scannned and did not find one
however)

the only thing that would bring back internet was a reboot
