Cannot Delete Zone Alarms vsmon.exe

John WILD

Hi

My standalone PC operates Windows XP Home. It used to have Zone Alarm (Free
Version) installed. After approx 1 year the ZA icon in the tray suddenly
disappeared and the PC did not close down cleanly giving a message I get a
message " TRd: ww: C:\Program files\Zone La.. Program not responding
closing down". I tried to uninstall it with the intention of reloading but
I got a message that vsmon.exe could not be opened. Following suggestions
given by a "guru" in the ZA Users Forum group I then proceeded to manually
delete all the ZA files involved. All appeared successful except I could not
delete C:\windows\system32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exe a key file of the system. Try
as I may I cannot delete it. When I try to delete vsmon I get "Cannot
delete vsmon it is being used by another person or program. Close any
programs that might be using the file and try again" . All the ZA files are
gone and there's only me!!!

Here's a few things I've tried:

I started up my PC in Safe Mode and tried to delete vsmon.exe .. no change.

I tried to delete it from the "MS DOS screen" . same old message

I have "cleaned" the registry by running Ccleaner, PConpoint.

I have used the programs Copylock and Killbox to try to delete vsmon.exe .
Neither could delete it. Copylock analysed vsmon and reported it was not
involved in any processes.

The Task Manager does not list vsmon.exe as either loaded or running.

Msconfig (Services) does not list "TrueVector Internet Monitor" or anything
"ZA like" as far as I know..
Regedit does not list under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs (or
Run) the entry C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exe
The only mention of Zone Alarm in the registry was a couple of entries
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ZONE ALARM\ which I have deleted ( to no
avail!)

A Google search "delete vsmon.exe" comes up with 55 hits some of which are
from this forum and describe my situation almost exactly. It is apparent
that this problem has been happening for over one year. None seem to give a
solution for the problem . Some of the threads have been quite promising
but, like a good murder mystery, just when a method is about to be revealed
the thread dies!!!

Anyone come across this problem or has a possible solution/program I could
try?

Before trying to delete from a dos prompt, use the task manager to kill the
explorer.exe process.
Once done use the task manager to run explorer.exe, to re-enable the desktop
& taskbar.
