Zone Alarm

I have been using Zone Alarm for a number of years and find it very
satisfactory. A month ago I noticed the 'ZA' logo disappeared from the tray
at the bottom of my screen and also when I closed down my Windows XP system
I get a message " TRd: ww: C:\Program files\Zone La.. Program not
responding closing down". The size of the window containing the message did
not allow the program to be identified any further.

From time to time when, I boot up, I get the message "RunTime Error
Program C:\windows\system32\zonelabs\vsmon.exe. This application has
requested the RUNTIME to terminate it in an unusual way". I close the error
window only to have it reappear a few seconds later. After a few repeats
this message does not reappear.

I tried to remove Zone Labs ( via control panel) but got the message
"C:windows\system32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exe could not be opened".

I tried to delete vsmon.exe but got the message "Cannot delete vsmon it is
being used by another program"

I suspect vsmon is the basis of my problems. I cannot close ZA, I cannot
remove it and replace it with a newer version. Any suggestions?

There appears to be two causes of the TRd: ww error. One is related to a
program calld Total Recorder. If you have it on your system you need to
update it. It could also be a virus/trojan so run up to date AV program or
go online and run an online scanner. There are sites that can scan using
multiple programs now. Once you have made sure you are not infectred you can
try uninstalling ZA either from within Windows or go to safe mode and
uninstall from there. If you do have a virus dont forget to turn off system
restore and restart it once clean.

John,
Have you gone into TaskManager and deleted the process zlclient.exe? This
may allow you to delete the vsmon.

I was getting the exact same error "This application has requested the
RUNTIME to terminate in an unusual way" . for a few different programs.
(process explorer from sysinternals, windows installer 3.1 and Nero 6) Its
a MSVB error and It was the first time I had seen such errors. After a week
of banging my head against the wall. I was finally able to uninstall
Microsoft dotNET framework 2.0 from a failed uninstall/install using this
method: http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/04/16/408856.aspx

I repaired dotNet framework 1.1 as suggested and all the errors I had been
getting were gone. Like an idiot I thought "jeez, dotNET framework 2.0 is on
windows update site so I must need it." I installed it again sucessfully and
the same errors immediately reappeared. AGAIN, I unistalled a corrupted .NEt
framework 2.0 and repaired 1.1. No errors since. So, IMO, 2.0 has bugs and
should not have left the beta stage. I have seen many posts here and at
windows update of being unable to install critical security updates/patches
to .NET framework 1.1. I bet 90% are caused by a bug in 2.0.

Hi Glen
I do have Total Recorder ( Pro) installed but a quick check shows that I
have the latest version so an update is not possible. I also have "VET"
installed and it reports no Viruses. "VET" is automatically updated and this
occurs almost daily
THanks for your suggestions anyway
