When one installs the new version of MSN, how come one
keeps getting the old version attempting to log in as
well. I would like to know where it is, as it does not
appear in Add/Remove Programs, or even on the Start menu
bar. It is very irritating, and is causing conflicts in
the later version of the programme. Please advise how to
clear all, as I do not mind having to reinstall from
scratch.
Thanks in advance

("Duh", as usual)

Goto Start, Run and type "msmsgs"
Then goto Tools, Options and check the Preferences section
Uncheck the option that Runs Windows Messenger when Windows starts.

Not sure he means this. I have the same problem. I installed the windows
update version, then installed V6 from the web. V6 starts up OK but on the
IE tab, it starts up version V5. Why didn't the installation of V6 just
update the V5 version instead of leaving two copies?

I cannot uninstall V5 becuase only one is shown in the add remove programs
sections.

Is it MSN Messenger version 5, or Windows Messenger version 5?

They are two different applications.

Windows Messenger. Why have we got two products that seem the same called
differently. Tjhey even have the same stupid "green blobby man" icons

There are two different programs (from different groups in Microsoft) ,
that get confused. Windows Messenger is the one that comes with XP and
is integrated, so it is used (for example) in OE Contacts. It comes as
version 4.7 - there is an upgrade at
www.microsoft.com/windows/messenger
to its version 5.0

MSN Messenger is similar but different and has MSN extras, which you may
or may not like. It has just gone from *its* version 5 to version 6.
Unfortunately when you get a message from Windows Messenger that there
is an update available the page it takes you to is the one for MSN with
a large Download button to download that - not the Windows one

So you now have both: Decide which (if either) you want to be rid of,
and there will be suggestions

But you can talk to yourself if you run both.
