that depends if you have NTSF format or FAT.
if FAT then:
MOVE your data from My Documents into some another folder.
boot computer with Win98 startup disk
delete the current WindowsXP folder (use deltree command)
install Home edition
your data will be preserved (just move it back to My Documents folder).

if NTSF:
you need to store your data on another disk or just burn CD
reformat hrddrive
install Home edition

In order to properly install Windows XP Home Edition on your computer - you
should

- back up all your data (email, contacts, pictures, documents, spreadsheets,
favorites, installation files, CD/Product install/serial keys..., etc) to
external media.
- download all the latest hardware drivers for each individual piece of
hardware from the hardware manufacturer's web page and save it to external
media.
- Download the full install of SP2 and save it to external media.
- Make sure you have installation media for all the software you wish to run
and all the updates for said software downloaded and written to external
media.

Disconnect from the internet...
- boot with the Windows XP Home CD,
- select to obliterate the C drive you had professional installed upon
- install Windows XP Home edition on the new partition
- update with SP2 and all the hardware drivers you downloaded
- install your antivirus software
- connect to the internet and visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and
download all critical updates (visit after each reboot until there are no
more critical updates.)
- Install your other applications, restore your backed up files, continue
on...
