OLD FART IN AUSTRALIA NEEDS HELP - InstallShield Wizard Quits.

P

Pat Garard

G'Day All,

Running Win Xp SP2.

In recent weeks, two installations (1 downloaded, 1 on CD)
just Quit! Others do not - they install successfully. (In a previous
life this particular CD also installed ok!!)

The downloadable self-extracts, gives a splash screen, says
that "InstallShield is preparing......", Quits and "Deletes temporary
files".

The CD gives a splash screen, says that "InstallShield is
preparing......", and then Quits.

The only clue is that neither has any version of SETUP.DLL
within the installation package.

Acting on a hunch, I created a restore point. I found an
"arbitrary" copy of a file called "_SETUP.DLL" in a
different downloaded package. I used that file with both
failing installs - and they installed - apparently correctly!!!

Does anybody know what's happening??

Try cleaning up the MS installer:

G'Day Malke,

Thank you for responding.

For which 'Product' should I clean up the installation
information?

I read through your original post again. Let me make sure I've got this
right:

1. You downloaded two unnamed programs. They didn't install correctly
because they were apparently missing necessary installation files.

2. Other programs install just fine.

Is this correct? If so, then I would say the issue is with whatever
those programs were that you tried to install. Maybe the downloads were
corrupt. Is your Internet connection generally pretty good? Is your
computer 100% spyware and virus-free? If you think so, how did you
determine this?

G'Day yet again.

I have resolved (but not solved) the problem.

If you examine the Folder:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Driver
it contains Numeric sub-Folders: \7
\8
\9
\10 etc,
these apparently correspond to various versions of the
InstallShield Engine. The appropriate version is automatically
selected according to the version of SETUP.exe bundled with
the application.

In my case, the version 9 sub-Folder (\9) was missing. Since it
had been present in the past, I decided (for safety) that ALL these
Folders might be suspect. I therefore updated ALL versions of the
InstallShield Engine, using the information at:

http://consumer.installshield.com/faq.asp?id=Q108163#Q108163n
See the section:
Tips & Pointers,
Tip 3 (Update to the Latest InstallShield Installation Engines)

Why the problem first arose is completely unclear.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

I'm glad you got it sorted. Thank you for taking the time to post the
solution. Why things went awry will probably remain one of the great
Mysteries of Computing. Burn incense. Make sacrifice. Chant. ;-)

Pat,
I found your post interesting. Therefore, I checked my computer at
C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Driver and saw that I only have
one sub-folder, No. 7 sub-folder. No.7 has a sub-folder "Intel" which has
six files "_ISRES1033.dll, IDriver.exe, IScript7.dll, ISRT.dll, IUser7.dll &
objps7.dll". Five of these files appear to have been written/produced by
the "InstallSheild Software Corporation"
I have installed many software programs from both CDs and Downloads, without
problems. Obviously, I am missing something here because I can't see the
need for your sub-folders No.s 8, 9 & 10 etc., but then I'm not an expert
just a novice trying to learn
