OL2003 Shortcuts Missing

We have a user using Outlook 2003 (in an Exchange environment) who
created numerous Outlook shortcuts. When he came in today and signed
on, all of his Outlook shortcuts were gone.

Any idea what may have caused this problem? Or how to avoid it in the
future?

The navigation pane in OUtlook 2003 seems a little fragile. We don't quite know why or how to avoid it.
