OL 2007 -- address book sorts

How do I get the address book to sort on Last Name, which makes sense,
instead of by first name, which does not? When I open the address book to
choose a recipient, either for email or mail merge, it lists by first name.
I have tried removing and shifting fields in Contacts, which doesn't help, so
even though the phone list is sorted by File As (in alpha. order A to Z), the
address book itself persists in listing by first name.

TIA

Go to Tools > Account Settings > Address Book Tab > Outlook Address Book >
Change... > Set sort order there

That certainly seems logical, but now the Address Book is blank. It seems
that Outlook differentiates between Contacts and Address Book. So... I'm
missing something here. Does the Address Book not comprise the contacts? Is
this something I have to build separately from the contact list, and if so,
why (and how?)

Thanks again.

In the interim, I ended up having to rename the list, which eventually
worked, thank you, but I had to restart Outlook. I've noticed that this is
almost always true when I make changes in Outlook. Perhaps you could add
that as a final step when suggesting changes. Once (for another Outlook
problem) I had to completely reboot the machine.

But thanks, it worked, finally.

Most seem to realize that almost all changes made in Outlook configuration
require a restart to take effect.

Then you did more than just reset your sort order. You probably also reset
which folder to display.

And, in fact, Outlook usually tells you that you must restart for address
book changes to take effect.
