Ok, How do I undo ATI's -helpful- (barf) feature

B

Installed an AIW 2006 on a new system last night, latest version of both
Catalyst & MMC. And everything is working fine.

But ....

ATI thought that it would be "helpful" if they added "Catalyst Control
Center" to explorer. In other words, in "My Computer", in the "File"
menu, "ATI Catalyst Control Center" is the first entry, above "New ..."

Thanks ATI, I guess you thought you were being helpful but I think it sucks.

So how do I remove it?

Thanks.

Ahh but the Catalyst Control Centre Crew think the pile of crap they
produced is the most important thing on your computer and you really ought
to be able to access it from the Start Menu, and the icon tray and your
desktop and the context menu for every folder in explorer.

I couldn't stand the pile of shit any longer and deinstalled it, but, from
memory in the registry under

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

delete the entry called ACE

or it might be under

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

Right-click on it and choose Remove from this list

There is no such entry (ACE) under either registry key.

And for the other person's response, right clicking does nothing at all.

For file icons (Windows Me/2000/XP):
Select Folder Options from the Tools menu in My Computer or Explorer,
and click the File Types tab.
Highlight the desired file type, and click Advanced.
Here, you can specify a new name for this file type (to be listed in the
type column in Explorer), as well as the default icon for files of this
type.
In the box entitled Actions, is a list of the customizable context menu
items. The bold item is the default (the action carried out when you
double-click on a file of this type).
You can add new items, change the default action, and remove unwanted
items here. For new items, simply specify the program with which you
want the action caried out.

Found these instructions while googling.

Open Regedit.exe, and go to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers.

If the (Default) value is set to {5E2121EE-0300-11D4-8D3B-444553540000},
delete it.

You'll see a bunch of keys. If one of them is "ACE", and it has a (Default)
value of {5E2121EE-0300-11D4-8D3B-444553540000} (the same as above), delete
that too.

BINGO! That fixed it.

Don't have your card so I can't say for sure but with the 9600 AIW,
installing the CCC is not mandatory or even needed. It's a resource hog
anyway.

OMG you can not figure out how your windows menu works!
Try checking Windows help index under "menu."

Geeze

Don't "geez" me. I know how menus work, but this was not intended to be
user-removed, and the only thing that did finally work was the registry
edit posted by "NobodyOfConsequence". Perhaps you don't understand what
was actually happening. Several other posters misunderstood the
symptom, but "NOC" got it right.

Danny, you have no clue WTF you're talking about. Right-clicking did
not do anything. It wasn't like an entry on the start menu, or
something you would pin there. It was in the "File" menu. You know,
File-Edit-View-Etc..., a the top of every window. Try right-clicking
those and tell me what happens...nothing.

Interesting but it doesn't address the issue that I was asking about.

You sure? I've never tried it but it says to edit the context menu.
That's what you are asking about.

I guess I did misunderstand because my "geeze" comment came from thinking the topic was
about a "pin". Sorry about that. 8)
