When I open a .xls file from Excel, everything is OK. But
if I double click the file from Windows Explorer I get a
message that states "The .xls file is already being used
by <name>, the file will be opened Read Only.
Is there a fix for this or is there a compatibility issue
with Windows XP?

This is caused by a file association screw-up. The easiest way to fix it is
to re-register Excel. From Start->Run enter "Excel.exe /regserver" without
quotes.

Thanks Jim. I am having the same issue with WORD. May I
assume that I will need to re-register word also?

Dan

Yes. Re-registering Word uses slightly different syntax.

For Word...........

Start>Run "winword.exe /r" (no quotes and note the space before the /
mark). Again, you may have to enter the full path to winword.exe

Dan,

If you are experiencing the "Read only" problem in Word as well as Excel and
you are opening them in Explorer over a network then there is a bug in XP
that causes this. Knowledge Base article Q328170 explains it and how to
fix it. Basicly it says that Explorer and the application both look at the
file at the same time and "think" that it is in use.
