I'm using Word to prepare a paper for school and the word count shows up at the bottom of the doc as I am typing. When I "save as" to pdf, the word count in the final pdf file increases by about 50 words. How do I identify the differences?

Welcome to the forum @Linda B :)

As far as I know, the word count on Microsoft Word doesn't necessarily include footnotes and endnotes, so I imagine that may explain your difference. When you click on Word Count, make sure that the box is ticked for text boxes, footnotes and endnotes, and hopefully the difference should go away.
