How do I reinstall the OS if it came preloaded on my computer from HP? Is
there a folder somewhere like the cabs folders in Win98?

After following the instructions presented in the other posts (i think
bud's). You should look around hp's websit for instructions on making a cd
form thier restore catalog that you will use in reloading the softweare.
This come in handy when things like the hardrives goes bad or you need to do
a parrellel install. Also you should be able to use it to slipstream a new
cd with all the updates currently installed (or at least the service packs).
eithor way it is nice to have an actual copy of the cd.

Thanks for your reply. But these instructions assume you have a copy of the
restore CD which I don't have.

I did look briefly and found that HP uses a hidden partition that you can
access to create a restore CD or DVD, but you have to be able to boot your
system to use that utility. My system will not finish loading the profile
after I log on. It stops between putting on the wallpaper and loading the
desktop icons and never continues. I've tried all the safe modes and various
usernames and nothing helps.

There are instructions on that same page that tell you how to access the
recovery partition also. Look for the title "Recovering the system without
using Windows"
If that doesn't work for you, look for the link at the bottom of that page
that tells you how to order recovery CD's from HP.

When you first boot the computer hit F10 at the first screen and that should
take you to recovery.

Well guys, the non-destructive recovery didn't go any good. It still does
the same thing when I try to start it. Any other ideas??????

Since nothing below mentions what the actual problem is, the only two
suggestions I have are to do the destructive recovery (back up what you need
to save first) or take it to a good shop and have them deal with it.
