What is the Best Way to Upgrade XP "Home" to XP "Professional"?

M

Marcia

I have Windows XP Home Edition and I need to install the Windows
Component "Internet Information Services" on my computer in order to
take a college course. I do not see this component listed, and I
read somewhere that you must have XP "Professional" (not "Home
Edition").

Please advise the easiest way for me to do this. Can I just install
Professional on top of my existing Home edition? If I must UNinstall
the Home Edition first, won't I have to reinstall all my other
software too?

I am inexperienced at installing operating systems, so your help would
be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Marcia

Hi Marcia,

You read correctly, you must have the Pro version to install IIS. You can
use the upgrade version of XP Pro to do this, you should not need to
uninstall the existing version or any of your software.

Please note, for some systems an upgrade to Pro may not be so pretty. This
is because the retail version may not contain needed drivers for the
system's hardware. This is particularly so in laptops. The best thing to do
is to check with the manufacturer for a customized upgrade, or if necessary
drivers are available for download.
