OEM & FAX

I have bought a new computer with Windows Professional already installed but
I now find it does not have the FAX facility. When I try add FAX I am asked
to insert a Service Pack 2 disc but it then cannot find the files it wants.
What can I do.

Same story - bought new computer with Windows XPPro - installed my old Ring
Central fax program (version SmartFax 2000) and it worked by combining with
the Fax Console - decided to delete and uninstall all the Microsoft Fax that
was in computer so there would be no conflict - BIG MISTAKE - nothing worked
- evidently SmartFax 2000 is not hot enough for the XP platform - so tried to
get Fax Console back - went through every entry in this newgroup concerning
the matter - tried every idea - looked for all the files mentioned to
decompress them or extract them - my CD insertion was useless - kept getting
messages that files could not be found on disk - finally tried again thru
Add/Remove - Window Component area - and told wizard to look for files in
"browse" list - pointed to System 32 - and then to file i386 - LO AND BEHOLD
- wizard began installing the fax console - today I used it - working fine -
now am wondering if I should uninstall my Ring Central program or keep my
hands off of everything - and get over my crazy-clean urges to pare down -
clean out - etc - any further advice will be wonderful. Spent 2 days doing
this - don't want to lose all that was gained.

You know the old saying-- Don't try to fix it if it ain't broke.
I'd leave well enough alone!
(I know these are old fashoned and trite, but they sure seem to apply!)

I still cannot believe what MS did to the fax system. It seems to have
gotten worse with every change, rather than better. The last time I bothered
to chase problems associated with modems, we found that (of all things)
problems had crept into the modem command reply parser. Don't know if they
were ever fixed by MS. The main problem had to do with random
characters/data in the serial data before the modem reply string. These
would sometimes prevent recognition of the reply string, causing the parser
to fail, and set a default. The modem connection would usually work.
However, at the very least, the reported connection type would be incorrect.
