Fax Service Installation

When I try to install the Fax Service in Add/Remove Windows components (in
Add or Remove Programs), it asks me to insert the Windows XP Service Pack 2
CD. I don't have such a CD. Is there another way to get that data/software?
(My computer has already been updated with Service Pack 2)

I have the same problem and tried going to the link you gave but couldn't
figure it out. I tried the link at Microsoft for ordering the CD but it took
me to something about SP3, not SP2. I use Roadrunner, so maybe I wouldn't be
able to fax anyway. I have a landline but don't know if connecting it to my
computer would allow me to fax. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The answer is in the first question of the FAQ:

1. How do I install the Windows XP Fax Services?
Windows XP Fax is not installed by default and must be installed from
Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components.

If you wish to connect to a shared fax server on Small Business Server 2000
or Windows Server 2003, you can connect to it using Windows XP Fax Services.

If you do no have a remote shared fax server, it will be necessary for you
to have an analog fax modem compatible with Windows XP Fax (see the Windows
XP Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/catalog ) and an analog phone line.

If your installation of Windows XP was from a CD, you will be prompted to
insert the CD and may need to browse to the i386 folder so the installation
routine can find the necessary files. If your installation files are on the
hard drive, you may need to direct the routine to the i386 folder there. If
you have applied SP1, SP2, or SP3, these files may have been moved to a
different folder (ServicePackFiles\i386), and you will need to direct the
routine to that folder.

If your installation was performed by an OEM (original equipment
manufacturer), it will be the responsibility of the OEM to supply those
files. Unfortunately, the installation disks supplied by many OEM's do not
contain the necessary files and you will need to contact the OEM to obtain
them. The fax installation files are not available to download from
Microsoft.

XP Fax cannot use your Roadrunner connection, you will need to connect the
landline to the to the Fax modem in your PC.

My Windows was installed from a CD. I keep telling it to search the CD for
i386 but it never accepts that - just keeps telling me to copy the file from
E:\i386 (my D drive won't even open so I have to use E drive). I also tried
to get it to search C drive but the same thing happens. Is there no way to
get a CD with SP2? I'm not trying to connect to a shared fax server. I have
the modem and landline and the fax thing used to work - probably the last
time the computer crashed and XP was reinstalled from the CD, it lost the fax
service that was installed.
Thanks for any help you can offer,
Nicholas

If you installed SP2 from Windows Update and you have a "normal" XP system,
you'll find the files you need in:

C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\

Click the "Browse" button on the window requesting the CD and direct it to
that folder.
