OE Newreader Disappeared

R

Richard Welch

OS: Windows XP SP2
Outlook: 2003

According to the help in Outlook 2003, to access newsgroups you do the
following:

Start the newsgroup reader
Show All
Hide All
The first time you use the newsreader, you must add the News command
to the Go menu.

1.. Add the News command to the Go menu.
How?

1.. On the Standard toolbar (toolbar: A bar with buttons and
options that you use to carry out commands. To display a toolbar, press ALT
and then SHIFT+F10.), click the Toolbar Options arrow .
2.. Point to Add or Remove Buttons, and then click Customize.
3.. Click the Commands tab.
4.. In the Categories list, click Go.
5.. In the Commands list, click News, and drag it, without
releasing the mouse, until it rests over the Go menu. When the menu displays
a list of commands, point to where you want the command to appear, and then
release the mouse.
2.. Click the Go menu, and then click News.
Which works fine when you add the button to the toolbar. The problem
occurs when you restart Outlook and click on the News button. It opens a
folder instead of executing the newsreader from OE.

If you reset the toolbar (I did) the option to add the news button is
now gone.

Is this an undocumented enhancement or am I doing something wrong?

No program has bugs, only undocumented enhancements!

Documented several times a day here.
To get the News command back, go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel |
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch
it, clear the "Always perform this check..." box and then click the No
button.

To get the News item back, open IE and click Tools>Internet
Options>Programs. Select Outlook Express in the Newsgroups drop-down,
Click OK. If the next time you start OE it asks if it should be made the
default newsreader, check the "don't ask again" box and click No.

Have you tried opening Outlook Express and using the OE newsreader? It's much
easier to set up and use. The Web based reader that skips both is even
easier.

And is the reason for all the posts into wrong groups, not quoting,
questions in subject lines and not the body of the post, and a myriad other
annoyances for those of us who use real newsreaders.

LOL - no matter how great technology is, there's still usually a
"loose nut behind the keyboard" you mean?

So Gordon, I use Free Agent - because I'm cheap. But, it's a pain
because they won't let you play with filters until you pay for it.
Any free readers that you know of that allow filter/watch/view
customization?

They said it was free, so I took two...

Have a look at Thunderbird - that seems to have a fair bit of filter
customisation. I'm not sure what you are trying to do, so I can't be more
specific.....

I just want a way to keep the conversations I'm directly involved in
(or at least interested in) filtered out of the rest of the junk, so I
can check them first without weeding, then go back if I have time to
the new messages I haven't seen. FA does it, but not until you pay
them.

And Outlook Express gripes my butt because of the integrated IM
(messenger) function - I have no need for IM to be integrated into my
news client, I have desire to obtain a Passport account, etc. - so I
quit using OE... And yes, I AM that petty! =]

Heard a lot about T-Bird, I'll give it a try. Thanks for the
off-topic response!

In that case, Thunderbird will do exactly that. You can set up a rule
(filter in TBird) that will automatically "watch" a thread that you post to.
You can also "watch" a thread manually as well. Then you have an option
under "View" to view "Watched Threads with unread" and that will view all
the threads (with all posts, read and unread) that either you have posted
to, or you have marked as "watched" manually.

I've just discovered you can set up a Custom View in OE to view Watched
Threads so that might do it as well. In View-Current View go to Define Views
and you can set a view to see just watched threads.

Cool - sounds like exactly what I'm looking for, I'll give it a try.
No web client for me ;)

Comments I've seen in other groups have indicated Xnews is a good reader and
it includes automatic decoding of yEnc.

So, disable the IM integration.
