Oddities with font changing

Consider the following sequence of events.

(1) I'm typing in Times Roman
(2) I change font to Arial
(3) I change to bold (ctrl+B)
(4) I type my Arial bold text
(5) I undo bold (ctrl+B)
(6) I change font back to Times Roman

Now, you'd expect I'd be left typing in Times Roman normal weight, wouldn't
you? And you'd be wrong. For some reason, bold switches back on when I
change font back to Times.

This is really annoying. What is going on?

Excuse me? Because I'm changing font by hand that somehow justifies
nonsensical application behaviour? Did you even read the question?

Also note that there exist any number of reasons for changing font by hand
(e.g. special symbols in mid-text of a paragraph) that styles cannot handle.

Yes, you're excused. Sorry if you don't like the answer. Special symbols
have nothing to do with the problem you've caused.
