odd LAN connection behaviour

Hi All,

I have a home network - just two computers connected with an ethernet
crossover cable - and generally it works fine.

It does something odd though !

If the host PC is switched on (Win XP Pro) and then I switch on the client
PC (Win 98) the shared folders of the client PC are not visible in the
Start>My Network Places folder of the host. If I click on View Network
Computers I can eventually browse to the shared folders - althought it's
really slow. Later, and this can be a couple of hours later, a bubble pops
up from the tray telling me that the LAN is now connected. All icons for
shared folders are now immediately vissible and the connections are fast.

It's not a major problem, but I'm curious does anyone know why this is
happening ? I used the Network connection wizard to set up the network and
Internet connection sharing is installed

It can take quite a while after a computer starts before it appears in
My Network Places and in network browsing.

To access a computer immediately, type its name in the Start | Run box
preceded by two backslashes:

\\computer

Thanks Steve, at least I know now that it is not a fault, but I am surprised
as I can't see why it should take so long. Electricity travels at the speed
of light and the other computer is only upstairs in my house !!

Also when both PCs ran Win 98 the connection was almost instantaneous after
start up, so I guess it must be a quirk of XP.
