Optimal network configuration

Small LAN: 4 PCs + network printer(which have loval IP address also).
Win XP home on all PC. Internet connection via ADSL modem with
integrated router: modem has only 2 LAN outputs(this modem for home
users mainly): LAN A and LAN B. One our PC connected directly to 'LAN
A' output, and the 'LAN B' output connected to HUB (8-port HUB Genius)
=> the rest 3 PCs are connected to this HUB. There is periodical
problems with access to network shares: mainly with this PC which
directly connected to modem (this PC also often have same problem to
access other network PCs): "..Share is not accessible... The network
patch was not found".

Internet connection configured correctly, internet works. I think the
abovementioned configuration isn't optimal, this ADSL modem have only 2
LAN output. Genius 8-port HUB is old enough. What is optimal
configuration for this network? Should we consider some Ethernet
broadband router with a built-in 7-port switch?(instead of HUB)

Hi
I doubt that different hardware would do you any good. There is no real
differences between what you have and the hardware that you think might
solve your problem. The difference is in the number of plastic boxes.
A Switch, in general, is considered better than Hub if you have a large
network (more than 10 computers).

Hi,

well, the hardware may be not the issue. But Hub i use isn't new, and
probably have less speed than ADSL modem. So one PC connected to high
speed ADSL modem, the other PCs connected to Hub which may have less
speed. Is there a sence replace Hub with switch?

well, the hardware may be not the issue. But Hub i use isn't new, and
probably have less speed than ADSL modem. So one PC connected to high
speed ADSL modem, the other PCs connected to Hub which may have less

Only advantage of switch over hub is when the collision rate gets
to high in the hub environment to slow net traffic down. Then if
you change hub for switch you will see speed difference in LAN
transfers.

Are you just trying to justify purchase of new toys? In your
environment you won't see a difference 99.9999% of the time.

Tranfering big files from one computer to another would only
be affected if a third computer was using bandwidth on the hub
and causing lots of collisisons. From one computer to the
outside world is limited by the link to the outside world, in this
case the dsl technology. If you have the lowest cost dsl account
which here is 768K, then a 10BaseT hub should be more than
enough to keep up with it.

On the other hand, having new toys to look at and play with
is nice.

DSL account speed is up to 2 Mbit/s (download) and up to
160Kbit/s(upload).
I just try to improve and optimize hardware configuration.
