Odd entry in My Network Places

George

Am using a WinXP PC. Under My Network Places, I wondered how the below
www.companynamehere.org (not its real name) website entry got in there, what
I must have clicked to get it there, and if I can just delete it?

My Network Places
entrepreneurship on www.companynamehere.org
SharedDocs on John's PC
SharedDocs on Bill's PC

It's also under...

My Network Places
Entire Network
Web Client Network
Www.companynamehere.org

Thanks

Assuming you never heard of this web site, go ahead and
delete the 'Place'. If it reappears magically, you have
some sort of AdWare on your computer and you can use
SpyBot or some other utility to purge your system of such
nuisances.

This is shortcut to so called "web folder". Nothing specific for adware, perfectly normal.
For example if you have web storage at msn.com, it will look exactly this way,
and provide faster access to your data.
Yes you can delete these shortcuts.

I would recommend a firewall which blocks activeX and
scripts from websites visited or at least prompts for them
because sometimes people use ftp and other web browsers
besides Internet Explorer or can just change their
settings in Internet Explorer internet settings and you
won't know it but an unsafe activeX application will
download with some virus or adware to install these remote
connections and let these people into your computer.
Never store your personal data such as bank account
numbers, social security numbers, passwords, personal
address or anything on a networked internet PC. Always
have a stand alone PC you sneaker net with floppies for
sensitive private data in short messages to the net and
delete those messages fast and use webmail not your pop3
on your hard drive. GL

Thanks, really appreciate all the insights. It's a plain non-profit
organization site I visited a few weeks ago before a business meeting, but
still don't know what I clicked to cause it to get saved in Network Places
(almost like the concept of saving Favorites). Any ideas how it got there?

I also have MS FrontPage and sometimes look at the structure of a
well-designed site. (And a link to my own site is in this list that includes
the non-profit as well as shared folders on c:drives). Would this have
anything to do with it?

Thanks again

This non-profit website actually shows up under two places ...

My Network Places
Entire Network
Web Client Network
Www.companynamehere.org <<<<<<<
SharedDocs on... (ok, normal)
SharedDocs on... (ok, normal)
entrepreneurship on www.companynamehere.org <<<<<<<<

Is it possible that "one" transaction put it in both places, or were there
"two" events or clicks.

Thanks

Also, the second one under Web Client Network won't delete (it's greyed
out), although I was able to delete the other one. Any ideas? Or will it go
away (when?) since the other one was deleted?

My Network Places
Entire Network
Web Client Network
Www.companynamehere.org (this won't delete)
