My Network Places: Local Network & The Internet

M.H.

I'm sharing the "My Documents" folder between two computers. Under "My
Network Places," the desktop shows 4 folders; each of the "My Documents"
folder from each machine, and the "SharedDocs" folder from each machine.
These folders exist under the "Local Network" header in "My Network
Places" on the desktop. Under the laptop, however, only the laptop's
"My Documents" and "SharedDocs" are present under the "Local Network"
header. The desktop's "My Documents" and "SharedDocs" folder exist
under "The Internet" header. On the laptop, I deleted the two network
shares listed under "The Internet" in "My Network Shares" Then I opened
a file in one of the shares. The share reappeared in "My Network
Places" under "The Internet." If I remove and recreate the share on the
desktop, it will reappear on the laptop, but still resides under "The
Internet" in "My Network Places."I would like to know why it's showing
up under "The Internet," and not "Local Network," and how to fix this.
Thanks.

This is frequently caused by a misconfigured personal firewall. Check the
settings on the laptop personal firewall - it's probably defined the desktop as
part of the Internet zone.

I'm using ZoneAlarm (ZA) 7.0.337.000. On each machine, in ZA, Firewall
Zones, the IP address for the other computer has been placed in the
"Trusted" Zone, not the "Internet" Zone. Each machine also has the
router/DNS server in the "Trusted" Zone. Looking at the configuration,
I notice that my two Network Adapters on both the laptop and desktop are
in the "Internet," not "Trusted," Zone, which strikes me as odd. Or
maybe placing them in the "Trusted Zone would bypass the program
control, and this is why they are in the "Internet" Zone?

I'm also using IBM Access Connections (AC). It is possible for this
application to forcibly disable file and print sharing, ICS, etc. for
each connection profile. However, the "Network Security" box is
unchecked, so I don't think that aspect of AC should be creating any
problems. ICS isn't enabled in Windows, either.

NetBIOS Over TCP is set to "enable" on both machines for their
respective adapters' TCP/IP settings. The adapters in the laptop are
the Intel PRO/1000MT and the Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG. The desktop has
a RealTek 8110S. Neither should have built-in firewalls. Neither
computer is in the NAT router's DMZ. The Windows Firewall/Internet
Connection Sharing service on each machine is set to Started, Automatic.

The shared folders on the laptop no longer display under the laptop's
"My Network Places," in any category. I think I deleted them, and now
they aren't reappearing, only the desktop shares.

Thanks.

Typically, I would designate the subnet as Trusted. I vaguely recall some other
ZA customer as seeing your symptom go away when heshe designated the subnet, not
individual addresses, as Trusted.

Zone Alarm is a controversial product, and your experience is nothing unusual.
Your browstat (other post) shows 2 computers, 1 domain, which is normal. Your
problem, almost certainly, is ZA.

Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience.
My email is AT DOT
actual address pchuck mvps org.

What should I add for the subnet? The subnet mask, 255.255.255.0?
Thanks.
