Folders in My Network Places not working and not showing proper ic

G

This is a new desktop computer and I think this has been a problem from the
beginning.
If I go to My Computer I have the Shared Docs with folder with hand under
and I can place files in there. This folder and its files can be accessed by
two laptops on the network. The laptops can access each other's folders
also.
If I go to My Network Places on this (the desktop) computer, SharedDocs on
Desktop and on two laptops are listed. However, they are not shown with
folder/hand icons, I get the icon for when Windows doesn't know what
application to use (white page shape with small coloured window in centre).
If I double click on any of these SharedDocs, nothing happens, not even the
one for this computer. I can right click and get properties and I get Type
of file: shortcut; Description: SharedDocs on Desktop; Location:
C:\Documents and Settings\JaneV\NetHood.
Can anyone suggest how I can get this working properly?
Thanks,
Jane

Jane,

I'd start with "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net
config workstation", from the problem computer and from 2 other computers, so we
can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely (download browstat!):

Thanks. Unfortunately, I dont understand the first part of what you say, it
all looks like things I've never done and have no idea where to start. I
tried the two links but they came up with "Error performing your request".
Is there any other way to access the information?

Jane,

This morning, the entire host for my website and millions of others is down.
Give it a few hours.

The diagnostic data is where we need to start, so try something and ask
questions about what you don't understand. We'll help you, if you're patient
with us.

I've been reading through and will read some bits again. Can I check that
I've understood one thing before I start doing anything, though? When I run
"browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net config
workstation" for desktop and laptop, you want *all* the data that comes up,
and you want it all in the message itself, not as an attachment?
Thanks
Jane

You have a segmented browser domain, 2 computers elected Jane as the master
browser, one elected Warwick.

Jane has IPX/SPX and NetBEUI, so start by cleaning up the network stack there.

I'm not too certain that's the only problem, though. Look at personal firewalls
and other impediments to SMBs, on all 3 computers.

Run new browstat on all 3 computers, as an update, and let's see what you have.

It seems to have been. All working ok at last, directly after the stage of
explicitly enabling NetBIOS Over TCP/IP. I'm very glad because the other
page you sent me to contained some steps that I think may have been beyond me.

Thank you so much!

Thank you so

What I should have added was that there was a missing detail I had not
mentioned in my original post because I didn't know it wasn't what I should
expect. At the top of the main white window in My Network Places it said
"Unspecified". This part of the window with its Windows generic icons is
still there, but now there is "Local Network" with the three computers
properly shown and functioning above it.

Thanks again.
