Occasional crashes upon startup

Hi there,

Just recently as soon as windows loads up and starts to display the desktop,
it will occasionally freeze when trying to load my programs in the system
tray and the quick launch bar. No icons are displayed in either of the two
places and my system is unresponsive. I sometimes have to reset my system two
or three times before everything will load up correctly.

I would appreciate any help

Right Click the My Computer icon on desktop. Select Properties.
Next, select Advanced. Look for a block that says Startup and recovery. Press the settings button.

In System failure section, turn off (un-check) Automatically restart.

Write an event to system log should be Checked (selected).
Apply change.

Doing this will set Windows to show a Stop code & text if it ever gets a "failure" condition. When you get one, make sure you write down all of the code and the text next to it. Then you can do more research.

Use MSCONFIG to review the Startup tab, which lists some of your user-apps that are auto-loaded at each Windows startup.

See what Event Viewer has in it's log. Select Start button/ select Run , then type in

eventvwr.msc<enter>

-- or Go to Control Panel / Performance and Maintenance/Administrative Tools >Event Viewer.

Review the sections and look for Errors or Warnings.
Double click---the information "may" give a clue.

You may consider suppressing Messenger from startup (altogether) by using MSCONFIG &
in the Startup Tab, un-check MSMSGS from there. You'd need to do a reboot to take effect.
