works but the 2 pc cannot see each other
I also have tried to ping the ip and the mack from both pc

The problem might be that you have a third party firewall that is not
recognized by the Security Center, disabled the windows firewall, but
the OS has locked down security in TCP/IP filtering, preventing any
network activity. Open the connection, TCP/IP properties, General tab,
Advanced properties, Options tab, TCP/IP filtering properties. Check
Enable TCP/IP filtering, and change Permit Only to Permit All in all
three ports/protocols.

I have done that already but no luck. When I let xp find
the ip automaticlly then it give the ip address of
169.254.118.42 no gateway. The status of the connection
is limited or no connection even when I try to ping the
ip from the same machine it gives me error code 65 time out

can i reinstall xp of sp2?

Wasn't me about Zone Alarm; I stopped using it years ago when it caused
these issues.
