O.T. - Combat Flight Simulator won't play?

N

Navyguy

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with a 127Gb hard drive (20.1 being used
and 107 free), running XP, SP3, Windows Firewall, Avira antivirus,
Spybot (for updates only), Spywasreblaster, ATF and Hive Cleanup and
all the programs work well together and are up to date.

I recently added a plug and play Logitech M310 wireless mouse which
seems to work well and I like it's on/off feature. I also added
Microsoft’s Combat Flight Simulator 3 (Battle for Europe). I can play
the Flight Simulator on the administrator side but it won’t let me
play it on the User side which is where I want to play it.

When I click the icon to start the game it gives me this

Please login with administrator privileges and try again.

Thinking it was the game perhaps I uninstalled it and re-installed it
using the custom feature hoping it would give me a solution for the
blocking issue. It didn’t, so is there something on my computer that I
just need to change the settings so that I can play it on the User
side?

Thoughts/Suggestions?

Thanks,
Robert

I don't play the game (or any games), but try this:

From you Limited User profile, right-click the shortcut you use to start
the program, and click Properties on the menu that appears.

On the Shortcut tab, click the Advanced button.

Click to select "Run with different credentials", then click OK.

Start the program using that shortcut, and enter the Administrator
account user ID and password.

I opened the program and it gave me this:

Which user account do you want to run this program?

(Selected) - Current user (DRAGON\Rob) - this is what I want

(Checked) – Protect my computer and data from authorized program
activity

This option can prevent computer viruses from harming your computer or
personal
Data , but selecting it might cause the program to function
improperly.

(Unchecked) The following User

grayed out

I clicked OK and it gave me this

Cannot create a file when that file already exists.

In your original post, you stated the game would not let you play
without admin privileges. If that's the case, and the installer did not
give you the option to "Install for all users" (which I find
surprising), then you must play as an admin from your limited user
account.

Leaving "Current user" selected when the box comes up will obviously not
let you play in that case, because doing that is the same as not using
the workaround at all.

Click "The following User" and it won't be greyed out anymore. Then ,
in the drop-down list, select your other account that has administrative
privileges, and type in the password for that account (the admin account
must have a password to use this feature). The game will then start as
if you were logged onto your admin account, but you will still be in
your limited user account.

I suggest also that you contact support for the game and find out how to
install it so that it can be played in non-admin accounts without having
to use this workaround.

I actually tried the above but I dont know what my Administrator
account password is. If I recall when I made the accounts I just
selected whether it was for a Administrator or User and with full
privilages or limited privilages but I dont remember making up a
password? As such, I wasn't able to use it although I did try it with
what I thought may be the password but it didn't work and I dont know
how to retrieve my password if such exists. I'm usually pretty good at
keeping track of things but I show no record of a Administrator
password.

I'll also contact the support group and see if they have already
resolved the issue with a download, or post this as a new problem.

Thanks As Always,
Robert

You most likely did not create a password for your admin account...if
you had, you would have to type it every time you logged onto your admin
profile, and so you would know it.

The workaround I gave does not work if you have a blank password for the
admin account.

Let us know if you find out from Support how to get the installer to
allow Limited Users to play the game.

Just Tab over the password.

I tried doing that and it gave me this:

Unable to logon

Logon failure user account restriction. Possible reasons are blank
passwords not allowed, logon hour restrictions, or a policy
restriction has been enforced.

Here's what I did I upgraded Combat Flight Simulator from 3.0 to 3.1:

http://www.microsoft.com/games/combatfs3/downloads.aspx

but it still wouldnt let me play on the User account. I then wrote to
Microsoft
support and all I've gotten is a big run around with a bunch of links
which don't
offer any solution to the problem.

At any rate, I want to thank everyone who offered advice.
