Numerous Problems

I have looked on Windows XP Newsgroups and Kelly-Korner with no success. My
friend's computer had no anti-virus protection then their internet stopped
working. I did an online scan Panda and it found numerous spyware and a
trojan horse.

When I boot up I get to help protect your computer, Windows has closed this
program Name: Generic Host Process for Win32 Services. I click on OK then it
comes up and again closes. Then it tries to report an error Event type: BEX
P! :svchost.exe P2: 5.1.2600.2180 P3: 41107ed6 P4:unknown P5: 0.0.0.0 P6:
00000000 P7: 00ad06d1 P8: c0000005 P9: 00000008. Under details
C:\DOCUME~1\apri\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER12fc.dir00\svvchost.exe.mdmp.
C:\DOCME~1\apri\LOCALS~1\temp\WER12fc.dir00\appcompat.txt.

I then get a pop-up reference Document Viewer asking for the CD-Rom because
it can't find the MSI. I don't know if this is a Windows or HP Program.

Then next error I get is "the instruction at "0x00ad06d1"referenced memory
at "0x00000000". The memory could not be written. Click on OK to terminate
the program. When I cancel that it says error 1706. No valid source could be
found for product Document Viewer. The Windows Installer cannot continue.

Flatten the system - reinstall XP clean. Restore data from backups.
You'll spend alot of time and might not get it running right.

Hi,

Can you boot to Safe mode (have you tried?)

How to start in Safe mode:

If you are able to get there, then you can start by puting the system into
diagnostic mode. Click start/run and type msconfig, then click ok. On the
general tab click on diagnostic mode. Then click apply/ok and reboot. Do the
messages still occur?

NO I'm sorry I had hit sent accidentally before I had listed all the issues.
I tried to edit the first posting and couldn't so I added it with a reply. I
don't expect a solution that quickly.

yes I can boot in safe and normal mode. I do not get all the errors in safe
mode, however after 5-10 minutes the internet connection stops working
therefore I believe there is still a hidden virus somewhere. I removed the
lsass virus from a friends computer a few years ago, is there a variant that
shuts down the internet connection you know of?

Hi,

First eliminate what is causing the problem by disabling junk in the startup
axis. Use selective startup in msconfig to limit that what loads until you
no longer get the error messages. Then see if the internet connection still
drops out. You may find that there is a common source to these problems.
Once disabled, you may not have any further problems with the connection.
Otherwise, we can always reset the tcp stack.

Thanks Rick and I don't think you're a nutcase, haaaa. Well I found an old
backup in advanced uninstaller in the system and brought it way back. I
reloaded the updated HP software and Windows XP Home SP2 updates. It is
running better. Still lose the internet after 5-10 minutes. I do Winsock
fix and re-start and it works again for 5-10 minutes. Still getting the
Document Viewer cannot find msi error 1706 after cancelling numerous times.
Now a new thing it is looking for the drivers for a streaming dispatcher. I
can't find anything on HP for that. Hummm. Any ideas. Thanks again very
much Rick.

Hi Rick,

Have you reduced the startup load via msconfig yet?

Also, have you run full scans in safe mode with anit-spyware products such
as the below in addition to a full antivirus scan? Doing it in safe mode is
critical to properly catching and removing some of the bugs.
