Number of system restore points

W

William B. Lurie

I'd like to:
1. Just look at dates of system restore points I have
2. Arrange to have system create just one system
restore point every month, and discard all earlier.

Please tell me how to arrange this, and thank you.

Hi William,

They are stored here: To show System Volume Information

Go to: Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/View/Show Hidden File and
Uncheck Hide Protected Operating System Files.

Then go to: C:\System Volume Information

To clean them up, create a restore point and then use the Disk Cleanup
advanced tab to delete all but the last restore point.

VB Script to run unattended Restore Point Creation as a Scheduled Task. The
Restore point will be identified as Automatic Restore Point with the date
and time the script was run.

Hi William

1) Look at the creation dates of the RPxxx folders under:

\System_volume_information\_restore{CLSID\RPxxx

to determine the dates of the backup points (must have folder options/view
set to see hidden and system files for this), or simply open SR from the
start menu and see what dates it shows as available for restoration.

2) You can't change the time interval for creating restore points, it's not
configurable.

There are three ways to easily remove restore points (you cannot do this
selectively).

1) Start/run cleanmgr.exe (disk cleanup), there is a "clean up" button on
the "more options" tab to remove all but the newest restore point.

2) Control Panel/System/System Restore tab, go to settings and reduce the
amount of space allotted to System Restore. This will remove older restore
points, how many depends on how much space you require for a point, and how
much space you leave.

3) Control Panel/System/System Restore tab, click the "turn off system
restore on all drives" box. This will eliminate all restore points. Once
reenabled, the system will begin creating new ones. You should reboot
inbetween doing this.

Hi William,

On NTFS systems, you must disable the Simple File Sharing in Folder Options
for the Security Tab to appear.

You'll need to take ownership of the folder.

1 SRP/month, you'll have to delete all but the latest point. If you do that, then you will have 1 SRP for the current month. No, you can not selectively delete SRPs.

Kelly, it gets deeper and deeper. I finally found and disabled Simple File
Sharing. Then when I got to /folder/Properties/Security, where I'm
supposed to assign my user name, I see 2 or 3 confusing places
and no place really to assign my "user name". I am a one-user
system. I see "Bill-XP" there, and that's probably the name that
was assigned. It's already there in the window.

Remember me? I asked how I can look at what restore points
are available. I think I'm going to change that request to this one:

"How do I stop making any restore points and delete all
stored restore insformation?" Then I can start all over again
and make a restore point, myself, and repeat this process
every month. Maybe that won't be as complicated.

Hi,

Disable Simple File Sharing in Folder Options, then right click the
Folder/Properties/Security, click the Add button. Add Administrators, ok.
On error click on Object Types, check the Groups option. Administrator
should now show up, highlight it and select the permissions that you want
for that group.

For your new question, you have already been answered by Rick and Jeff.
Good luck!)

\WBL\
