After connecting a USB thumb drive (memory stick) to my
Windows 2000 PC and then removing it I get the following
message displayed as a Warning Event Notification: The
number of Hard Disk Drives in your system has decreased...
The removed thumb drive is not showing up in the device
manager. How do I correct this problem?

Once the USB drive is physically removed, it is gone. Hence, a decrease
in the number of [physical] hard drives in the computer. And to avoid having
the warning event notification, right click on the USB icon in the taskbar and
go through the dialog boxes to stop and remove the USB memory stick.
