Number formatting in footer

I'm using the auto text in a footer "page x of y" but all of a sudden
(literally!) the numbers appear black with a shaded box behind them. I need
them to be regular text, but don't know how this happened and can't figure
out how to get rid of it. HELP! (On deadline here)

Go to Tools, Options, View tab, "Field shading" option "Always", change this
to "Never".
This is for 2003 and prior, for 2007 go to the Microsoft Office Button to
display the Office menu and click Word Options.

Hope this helps

on, but now it's fixed. THANK YOU.

Note that field shading can sometimes be useful, since it allows you to see
the fields in a document. Also, field shading doesn't print.
