There is a process call ASR but you would have to have created an ASR floppy
disk for such occassions.

I don't know if you have the means to do this . . . if this happened to me I
would temporarily connect the hard drive from your computer to the ide cable
on another xp computer. Boot into XP and then copy the file from the drive
that is currently running to the drive missing the file.

To see the file you have to change your view so that system files are not
hidden. ntld is in the root of your drive.

If you do this, the easiest way to connect the drive is to just use the
cables that are normally running the CD Drive.

Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard Disk. Boot the XP CD and, instead
of Setup, take the immediate R for Repair. Assume any password
requested is blank, and TAB over.

The CD is probably seen as drive D:, in which case

COPY D:\i386\ntldr C:\

To be sure, the other file needed is
COPY D:\i386\ntdetect.com C:\

And you may have deleted boot.ini, too, so check by giving
Attrib -H -S C:\boot.ini

If it is not found, give
BootCfg /Rebuild
to make a new one
