See if the CD will boot in another computer. If it does, then there's
something wrong with the optical drive in your laptop. The optical drive
not working has nothing to do with the hard drive you put in. The error
message you're getting indicates that the system is correctly set to boot
from the optical drive first, failing, moving onto the next place to look
for boot files (the hard drive) and of course not seeing them because there
is no operating system installed on the drive (NTLDR is missing).
What happened to the restore disk/OS disk you got with the laptop? If you
didn't get one and didn't make a restore disk (and of course the hidden
partition holding the restore image would have gone with the original
drive) then the best solution is to get a restore disk from the laptop
mftr.
More details about why you are installing a retail version of XP on your
laptop might help narrow down the cause.
