When I start the computer all I get is the message "NTLDR is missing. Press

Do you have a non-bootable floppy disk in the floppy drive? Is your
BIOS recognizing the presence of your hard drive?

You'll need to boot with your Windows CD, and when you see the message "Press
any key to boot from cd...." obviously press a key, ha ha.

Choose the Repair (R) option, but do not begin a "repair install". You want
to choose "Recovery Console" (C). You'll need the administrator password
(usually blank on many home systems, unfortunatly).

Type MAP, and then press ENTER. Note the drive letter that is assigned to
the CD-ROM drive that contains the Windows CD-ROM.

Type the following, and then press ENTER.
copy drive:\i386\ntldr c:\

Now type this, and press ENTER.
copy drive:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

If you are prompted to overwrite the file, type y, and then press ENTER.

Finally, type EXIT, press ENTER, and allow the computer to reboot.

Take the disk out of the floppy drive and try it again.

or check the following possibilities:

Cause:

1.. Computer is booting from a non-bootable source.
2.. Computer hard disk drive is not properly setup in BIOS.
3.. Corrupt NTLDR and/or NTDETECT.COM file.
4.. Misconfiguration with the boot.ini file.
5.. Attempting to upgrade from a Windows 95, 98, or ME computer that is
using FAT32.
6.. New hard disk drive being added.
7.. Corrupt boot sector / master boot record.
8.. Seriously corrupted version of Windows 2000 or Windows XP.
9.. Loose or Faulty IDE/EIDE hard disk drive cable.

Thanks to all of you for your advice. This computer is two years old. It came
with XP. Nothing has been added.
