While doing house cleaning, I must have accidentily deleted the above file in
my window xp prof of my labtop. I have a desktop which also runs on windows
xp pro also, just wonder if I can just "slave" the labtop hdd on the desktop
and copy over the ntldr file? Look forward for your response, thanks

For completeness, my labtop is dell and my desktop is a retail xp prof version.

While doing a search in this newgroup, I came across thistcase" 8/17/2004
quote

Boot the WinXP CD, load the Recovery Console:
HOW TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console in Windows XP [Q307654]
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307654

From the command prompt, copy ntldr from the I386 folder on the CD to the
boot partition.

C:\>copy X:\I386\ntldr C:\

Where X is whatever letter is assigned your CD drive.

-- unquote

so what I did was at command prompt c:\windows>chdir c:\
and gives me c:\>
and typein copy d:\I386\ntldr c:\ and hit enter and it copied 1 file.
Then type c:\>chdir windows to give me C:\windows>exit
and it reboot. But when reboot, the dell logo will appears and the the
reboot cycle continues with only the dell logo appearing each time. Anyone
knows what I gone wrong here? Would it help if I use the dell reinstallation
cd. Cos we do not want to reformat the labtop. Please help ......... thanks

The SYSTEM partition is defined by Microsoft as where files needed for
BOOTING reside.

The BOOT partition is defined by Microsoft as where files needed by the
SYSTEM reside.

This was always confusing to me until I starting taking Ritalin.

See the following KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318728

Use Method 2 to repair the boot files. The article was written for Windows
2000, but works for XP as well.

Many thanks and I had sorted out the problem by using the
ntldr and ntdetect.com and rebuild the boot.ini.

With ref to Malke posting on 7/13/20065.26 am, i just wonder if I were to
use his/alex posting, how do I go about as I'm not sure on the following quote

Use
Attrib -H -R -S C:\boot.ini
DEL C:\boot.ini
to delete the bad one
BootCfg /Rebuild

Hope you will be able to explain in details how do I follow the above
instructions using attributes.

thanks

1.. Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
2.. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
3.. Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.
4.. Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.
5.. You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that
password.
6.. Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In
the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter, which in
this case is "e." This letter may be different on your computer.

copy e:\i386\ntldr c:\
copy e:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

7.. Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the
computer and reboot.
