Hi,
I was going to start to prepare to install service pak 2 & was reading info
on what to do before installing, I read the area that tells how to install
the backup utility for windows XP home edition, it says to install Windows XP
CD. Then browse it for the NTbackup file etc...

What do I do if I don't have a XP CD?? I have 3 recovery disks? is that
what is being referred to & if yes which one would I put in?

I have a feeling it is not referring to the recovery disks but, not sure?

Thanks,
Linda

No, you won't find ntbackup.exe on the recovery disk.
What exactly do you actually wish to do? Back up your
data? Back up the whole hard disk? Where to?

As long as you have your recovery set, and have saved all of your own
personal data to CD, you should be covered..

The end result I'm after is my instant messaging to work currently it says
not available on this version then it sends you to the info to download
service pak 2 that is suppose to have instant messager in it? If I'm
understanding correctly.

So then when I was reading the installation instructions for service pak 2
then it says check for issues w/it with your manufactorer so I clicked on the
HP link then it suggested using the back up utility in windows XP, I actually
already do back up w/a program called retrospect 6.5 I usually do a duplicate
of C drive & do wkdy. backup sets but, it usually shows a few errors after
its done which I'm not sure if it is anything to worry about or not? or how
to get rid of them.

I was unaware that there was another back up utility available on windows XP
so I thought I would try that one & see if it had any errors when done, I
backup to a external hard drive 120gig size.

I was a little concerned about installing service pak 2 in that a couple
yrs. ago when speaking to tech service regarding a huge problem w/my computer
when the tech asked me if I'd installed service pak 2 & I said No he said
"good" when I inquired he made it sound as though there may've been some
problems it would cause had I installed it. So since then I've never let that
update go through.

So I guess if I'm unable to get the backup utility it won't be a huge
problem I just thought it wouldn't hurt to back it up w/both programs.

Thanks for your help,
Linda

There is nothing wrong with Service Pack 2 but then accidents
do happen. User files should be backed up before any major
installation. Since you're doing this already you can safely go
ahead and install SP2.
