NTBACKUP in WindowsXP

P

Paul Wehland

How the hell do I backup my files on Windows XP? !? I have a DLT 7000 drive
and NTBACKUP.EXE
Jesus Christ can this get any more complicated? All I want to do it backup
files from my hard drive to my DLT 7000 tape drive. I have spent about 2
hours trying to figure this out. Endless inconsistent verbiage in the help
files. Media Pools, Libraries, tapes, Free Media Pools, Import Media Pools.
I've read the help file and re-read the help file. I cannot get this done.
Help files suck, NTBackup GUI sucks, Removable Storage service sucks. This
all sucks. What the hell am I doing wrong?

Was this put in place for third-party backup software? I will go out and
buy some third-party backup software tomorrow as Microsoft cannot seem get
this right. Perhaps it just doesn't work all together and they made it as
tough as hell to use so that you never have to.

What gives?

Hi!Paul!

Although Windows XP Professional Edition and XP Home both ship with
NTBackup, only XP Pro installs NTBackup by default. You can install
NTBackup for XP Home by performing the following steps:

Insert the XP Home CD-ROM.
Navigate to the VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP folder.
Double-click the ntbackup.msi file to install NTBackup

Microsofts backup is very basic oir non-existant when it comes to using CDs,
Tapes etc. I quite agree with you.

You have your solution - ie get a third party tool (until MS gets its act
together re backups). In the meantime you could use your hard disk to create
single file backups and then just copy that file to storage device. With a
CD you would of course need software to span the CDs if the file was too
large to fit on one.

Paul, most if not all of the RSM functionality should happen seamlessly
without too much user intervention. But, I do understand your dilemma if you
start experiencing problems with devices and software.

Backup should start RSM, RSM should identify your media type and have the
correct pools created when ntbackup arrives on the desktop. At the most,
you may have to answer a couple popup questions as ntbackup is starting.
After ntbackup is started, click the backup tab and select the volumes from
the drive tree on the left or files from view pane on the right for backing
up. Select DLT media from the lower right of the main frame as a
destination.
