NTbackup completely hangs XP pro...

I recently did a full install of Win XP Pro to a clean
3+GB NTFS partition. I have an HP Colorado 5gb Travan
tape drive which NTbackup seems to recognize fine.

When selecting most of the system files on the XP boot
volume for backup, the backup process stalls halfway
through the 15,000+ files it's trying to copy and
completely hangs the system. Shutdown doesn't shut the
system down -- I have to turn the machine off!

What's wrong here??

I've seen backup hang when it hits bad blocks, I not had any bad tapes but presume it freaks out with tape like bad other media.
