NT4 to Win2K Upgrade. Domain Name Problem

We are going to be upgrading our Windows NT4 Domain to either Windows 2000
or 2003. The problem is that ages ago the consultant that set up our
network used the name DOMAIN.NET (not our real domain name...). When we
upgrade to Windows 2000/2003 our domain will be DOMAIN.NET.COM is that
going to cause a problem? Could the period in our domain name cause other
problems? I want to find out these things BEFORE we start tearing into
things here.

DNS is very important to Windows 2000. I suggest you do as much research on how W2K integrates with DNS. Here are a few KB articles:
