NT4 Upgrade -- Netbios name issue

M

Michael Fallon

We are getting ready to upgrade out NT4 domain. The NT4
domain is called companyx.com. We will want to preserve
this setup during the upgrade to 2000. The AD name we are
proposing to use is also companyx.com.

In preparing for the upgrade I came across a Microsoft
article http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?
scid=kb;en-us;288443

From what we can tell this applies to our situation. Our
netbios name and AD domain name will be in conflict. We
may be running into a problem with this design. Can
anyone explain what Microsoft is talking about here.

I had the same issue on a network I inherited. This is
what I had to do:

1. Stop & Disable all services on your server(s) that are
set to use a domain account to startup (i.e.
COMPANYX.COM\Administrator)
2. On your PDC FIRST!, change the domain name in the
network / computer name properties. You will receive a
warning here. MAKE sure you have done a full backup.
3. Restart your PDC.
4. Change the domain name portion of all your service
accounts and test that they start.
5. Do the same on all your BDC servers.
6. Do the same on all your workstations. If you get any
errors trying to change the name on your systems, try
logging on as the computer administrator instead of a
domain one.

If everything was done right you should have retained your
settings and user settings but be on the new domain name.
