I'm currently having a problem on two different servers both running Win 2K
server (one runs advanced server actually but I'm sure that won't make a
difference.

Each server has an HP Surestor DLT VS80 tape.
They have the drives installed and they have actually both got the latest
drivers via Windows update though I have tested both with and without these.

One on server, I cannot get Windows BackUp to see the tape. It has only the
filesystem option set and greyed out soI cannot choose a device. I have
tried re-booting and everything but it seems to make no difference. It
doesn't want to let me choose the tape.

The second server lets me choose the DLT tape but when I click the final
button to start the backup, it comes up with a message saying there is no
unused media in the drive. However, the tape is blank and I tried re-erasing
it. It makes no difference.

Anyone have any clues becuase I at the end of my ideas now.

Thanks

The first time a tape is used, it must be prepared by RSM.

Why one server won't see the drive is beyond me.

What does Device Manager show about the tape drive?

Thanks for that
Actually, I've very little experience with Tapes on Win NT BackUP and had no
idea about the removable storgae bit in Computer Management. I was wondering
how yuo formated tapes etc.
I have found teh answer to the first proble. The device was disabled in
removable stoprage. Probably because there was an old device that was
replaced. Windows probably automatically disabled them both as tehy
conficted. I've enabled them and enabled the drive and now have some
control. However, I cannot "prepare" the tape as it says it is in use. I
think Arc SErve is blocking it. so I'll investigate that now

The other machine has teh removable storage service disabled and I cannot
enable it. I think that Dantz Retrospect which is installed is doing
something to it. The standard windows driver conflicts with the retrospect
one so the standard windows one is usually not installed. If I install it,
Retrospect stops working. I am currently trying to test the tapes with NT
BackUP. However, this server has a CR writer installed and that again won't
work because the remote storgae service won't start. I'm not totally sure
why Retrospect would prevent it.

Many thanks for getting me on track
James

On the server that Removable Storage works I still have a problem

I have cleared all the media pools and have a blank tape in the free pool
idle and available.

When I try to run NT backup, I get it started, and I get the indicator
saying Tape Loading is in progress. It then stops and says that it cannot
detect the selected backup device. The drive is enabled and it says it is
loaded with t he media

Any ideas on that

James

.
To fix the "There is no unused media availble with the
selected type" I had to search and removed the 4mmdat.sys
files. I then ran a SFC /scannow from the command prompt
with the OS install disk to restore the files and did a
reboot. The system then recognized my 4mm and DLT tapes
and I was able to perform backup/restore. I'm not sure if
if you have to perform a reboot but I did anyway. I had
also removed all the devices but left the SCSI connection.
Upon reboot, I ignored the "found new hardware" and the OS
loaded both devices fine. I guess if you don't have the
OS disk you can copy the 4mm/dlt.sys files from a machine
with a similar OS and restore them to their oringinal
location. I'm happy now. I don't know if the fix is
permanenet because I'm unable to find the exact cause.
