Notification icons missing

The notification area has simply vanished - except for the clock. I have
checked the taskbar properties, and it's supposed to be there. The various
programs are being loaded (they're in msconfig). HELP is no help. I have
rebooted several times. I have not been monkeying around with screen
resolutions or installed new software or hardware.

Will appreciate enlightenment, well, just getting the icons back where they
belong. And to think less than week ago I was complaining about how nay
there were and wondering if I could get rid of some.

Click on the (chevron) << looking button in the Taskbar notification area.

[[In Microsoft Windows XP, icons in the Notification area (on the right side
of the taskbar) are, by default, hidden when they are inactive. This
behavior is determined by a setting, which can be cleared or selected for
each item.]]

If that isn't the problem...

If XP Pro, see this...

the notification icons, is hidden. The taskbar displays only the Start
button, taskbar buttons, custom toolbars (if any), and the system clock. ]]

Thanks for the reply, but this isn't the question - I guess I wasn't clear.
The notification area simply isn't there at all, so there's no >>.
Usually there'a whole bunch of icons, some of them always showing, and the
rest hidden.

On the taskbar properties box, everything below the 'show the clock' box is
grayed out, so I can't click the customize button or choose 'hide inactive
box.' It's as if the whole notification area has just died.

How do I get it back?

Then you didn't *read* my whole post.

If XP Pro, see this...
[[If this setting is enabled, the user’s entire notification area, including
the notification icons, is hidden. The taskbar displays only the Start
button, taskbar buttons, custom toolbars (if any), and the system clock. ]]

In addition or if XP Home check these two keys...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Value Name: NoTrayItemsDisplay
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = default
1 = enable restriction (NO notification area)

I don't think that applies because I'm using XP Home (sorry, forget to state
that originally), and that line doesn't appear in my registry location.
Also, the clock can be enabled or disabled.

Well, I read everything you referred to me, and this one worked, the line in
Current User. I've bookmrked the website's the problem.
