Notification icon does not appear for Critical Updates

Hi all,

First, my apologies for posting this here. No replies from the Windows
Update news group.

I am running XP SP2 on a well-maintained computer (no malware detected).

On Feb. 8. 10 critical updates were released by Microsoft. I use my
computer for many hours each day, and I am set up to receive and download
updates automatically. (My settings are the default for automatic updates.)
However, no notification icon is seen in the notification area. I can go to
Windows Update and download the updates using a custom/express install. I
did this for 8 of the 10 updates. It puzzles me as to why the Update icon
does not appear in the notification area stating that updates have been
downloaded. It does appear there when I download updates manually. The
command
wuauclt.exe /detectnow produces no response of any kind. Services are set
to automatic/start for Cryptographic, Background Intelligent Transfer
Service and Automatic Updates. On examining the WidowsUpdate.log I can see
the error CClientCallRecorder::Disconnect Call with error 0x8024000c. The
MS Knowledge Base is unhelpful in my quest as to what this means and how to
fix it. Any ideas would be most welcome. Please address any replies to
the news group. My email address is false. Bert

For the first Automatic Updates setting, check and see what time the
updates are supposed to be downloaded and installed. Is the computer on
at that time? Are you logged in with an account that has administrative
privileges at that time? Try setting the Updates to download when
available and notify you when ready and see if that works. Another
issue could be if the Updates are a Scheduled Task in an account with a
blank password.

Hi Malke

My sincere thanks for your reply. It is much appreciated. I had tried most
of what you had suggested.

I have (after nearly 3 days of investigation) found the probable cause.
Strangely, it appears to be a problem with Norton Antivirus 2005's Internet
Worm Protection. This acts as mini-firewall. It is odd because another XP
SP2 computer in a similar setup on my ad hoc network does not suffer from
this problem. We are both logged on with administrator privileges and both
our passwords are not zero length. Next Patch Tuesday, I will investigate
this again! Please address any replies to the news group. My email address
is false. Bert

Norton. Ah hah! Thanks very much for pointing this out. It just confirms
my feeling about the lack of quality control in the Norton products
now. I'm glad you figured it out. Thanks for taking the time to post
this - it will help lots of other people.

Hi Malke

Once again, my sincere thanks for your reply.

I have now come across 3 XP SP2 machines with this problem (MS critical
updates are set up to be automatically downloaded and installed at 3 AM, yet
no notification icon appears in the notification area). All 3 computers
have been connected to the Internet for long periods since Patch Tuesday.

Two of the machines are running Trend Micro Internet Security (firewall and
AV, with latest updates). All are using ADSL connections behind a
wireless/router/switch. None have problems getting the updates manually.
None are behind a proxy server. All are using IE6 SP2. Tools, Options
connections, LAN show nothing in proxy. All show 0x8024402C errors in the
WindowsUpdate.log. Here is a small portion of one log:
2005-02-13 21:13:20+1100 1484 c2c ISusInternal API failed
CClientCallRecorder::DisconnectCall with error 0x8024000c
2005-02-13 21:13:20+1100 1104 b28 ISusInternal::DisconnectCall failed,
hr=8024000C.

Strange and interesting! Please address any replies to the news group. My
email address is false. Bert
