Windows Update not applying critical updates

I have been running Windows Update on Win XP Home. It identifies 10 critical
updates and then goes on and installs them and tells me it's finished (no
restart required though).

Then when I go back and scan for updates again it says that there's the same
10 critical updates need installing. Also, none of them appear in add/remove
programs.

I cannot run the MSBlaster removal tool at all because it moans that one of
the hotfixes has not been applied.

Any suggestions?

For the latter:

This script, once run will prompt you to install the blaster patch and bring
you there:

This script removes all variants of the W32.Blaster.Worm (original, B, C, D,
E and F) and will inform you whether or not the patch is already installed.
