Critical XP updates don't install

I'm helping a novice who had a virus problem (now clean). When I install critical XP updates and then do a restart I find they haven't installed. The same critical updates (12 of them) are shown after another scan on the Windows Update Site
The Windows Restore feature has been left "off" until these problems are resolve

If you do not get any errors check what does you "Windows Update.log" file
say. It's located in %systemroot% (c:\windows) directory.
If you get an error, what is it ?
