Nothing on desktop

My friend has a bit of a problem. When he turns on his pc he gets to the
desktop but no icons are there and also the toolbar isnt at the bottom of the
screen, theres NOTHING. A pop up comes up saying something like windows must
shut down and has to buttons on it debug and close. When you hit debug
nothing happens and close obviously shuts the pc down. All of this happened
after he downloaded updates from the microsoft website?

Also when he gets to the xp welcome screen the turn off buton isnt there,
only the part to sign in.

You can try booting to the Safe Mode and removing the updates from
here via the Control Panel > Add and remove Programs. If this solves
the problem, reinstall the updates one by one to find out, which one
causes the problem.
